Varieties of Chickpeas Available In India

Desi Chickpeas – Available in Tan or Black colour, this variety of chickpeas are grown in dry lands, mainly in India and Bangladesh. These are smaller in size and angular in shape.

Kabuli Chickpeas – This variety has a thin coat and is available in a range of colors from white to tan. It is grown in Afghanistan, Africa, Pakistan, Europe, and Chile.

Climate Requirement

Chickpeas crop grows well in good moisture conditions with a temperature between 24°C and 30°C. It is a winter season crop and can grow well in both irrigated and rainfed conditions. The crop cannot sustain in a frosty climate.

Soil Requirement

Chickpeas are grown on moderately heavy soils, black cotton soils, and loamy sandy soils. Soils with a good internal drainage are also best suited for the cultivation of this crop. The soil should not be heavily alkaline in nature and the ideal pH range should be 5.5 to 7.0 for better yield.
